The Catacombs of Paris is one of the most popular tourist spots around the area, but many people go in there without even knowing the history of how the catacomb came to be. Well, that is exactly what I am here for, you're welcome ;)
It all started in the late 18th century, the city's cemeteries were being overflown and created major health risks for those living close to them. So much so, the remains of 6 million people needed reburial and were taken to an old mine tunnel twenty meters under the city. Although the tunnels were not meant to be known as a tomb, it started being called the Catacombs because it had a striking resemblance to the Catacombs of Rome. The Catacombs stretches to about 200 miles and, just for reference, Paris itself is 40.7 miles. So the underground burial is bigger than the city. Furthermore, the Catacombs is now considered a museum of Paris which attracts about 300,000 people per year and is available for anyone to enter for a small fee. Down below are just some pictures of my experience there!
